Chasing Cold Fire: The Volunteers and Scientists Keeping Watch Over Appalachia's Vanishing Fireflies

There's a moment, just after full dark settles over a cove hollow in late June, when the forest exhales. The tree frogs dial up their chorus, the creek finds its voice again after the daytime noise fades, and then — if you're lucky, if the habitat is still healthy enough — the light show begins.
Fireflies. Not just any fireflies. The synchronous kind, Photinus carolinus, whose males pulse in near-perfect unison across the understory like a slow, rolling heartbeat of cold green light. It's one of the most spectacular natural events in North America, and it happens right here, tucked into the Southern Appalachians, mostly in the national forests and hollows of western North Carolina, eastern Tennessee, and the fringes of northern Georgia.
But the people who study these beetles will tell you something the tourist brochures leave out: the light is getting dimmer.
Who's Out There in the Dark
The firefly research community in Southern Appalachia is small, scrappy, and deeply passionate. It's a mix of university ecologists, National Park Service biologists, and an expanding network of citizen scientists who spend their summer nights crouched in the leaf litter with clipboards and red-filtered flashlights, counting flashes and logging GPS coordinates.
Dr. Lynn Faust, one of the foremost authorities on North American fireflies and author of Fireflies, Glow-worms, and Lightning Bugs, has spent decades cataloging species across the region. Her work, along with researchers at institutions like Clemson University and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park's own science division, has helped establish baseline population data that's now being used to track troubling shifts in firefly activity.
But the backbone of a lot of this monitoring isn't Ph.D. holders — it's regular folks. Programs like Firefly Watch, coordinated through the Massachusetts Audubon Society, recruit backyard and backcountry observers across the country. In Appalachia, local naturalist groups and trail volunteers have become essential eyes on the forest floor, logging data that professional researchers simply don't have the bandwidth to collect alone.
"You can't be in a hundred hollows at once," one western North Carolina field coordinator put it plainly at a community science night last summer. "We need people who know their patch of woods."
What the Data Is Actually Saying
Here's where things get uncomfortable.
Long-term observational data, combined with emerging research on firefly ecology, is painting a picture of decline across multiple species and multiple regions. A 2020 study published in the journal Bioscience identified habitat loss, light pollution, and pesticide use as the three biggest drivers of firefly population drops worldwide. In Southern Appalachia specifically, researchers are layering in a fourth concern: climate disruption.
Fireflies are exquisitely sensitive to moisture and temperature timing. Their larvae, which live underground for one to two years eating earthworms and snails, need consistent soil moisture. Their adult emergence is cued by a precise combination of temperature thresholds and photoperiod — basically, the length of nighttime darkness. When spring arrives too warm, too dry, or too erratically, that timing gets thrown off.
In recent years, field observers in the Smokies and Pisgah National Forest have noted shifts in peak emergence windows. What was reliably a two-week synchronous display in mid-June has, in some locations, compressed or fragmented. Some hollows that reliably drew researchers in the early 2000s have gone quiet.
"They're not gone everywhere," one researcher was careful to note. "But the consistency we used to be able to count on — that's changed."
Light Pollution and the Long Reach of Development
Drive the Blue Ridge Parkway on a clear night and you'll still find stretches of genuine darkness. But the orange glow bleeding up from Asheville, Boone, Brevard, and the growing constellation of vacation rental communities is spreading into valleys that used to be pitch black by nine o'clock.
For synchronous fireflies, this matters enormously. Male fireflies navigate and signal using the contrast between their own bioluminescence and the surrounding darkness. Artificial light at night, what scientists call ALAN, drowns out that contrast and disrupts mating behavior. Females may fail to respond to males they can't distinguish from background glow. Populations that can't successfully mate don't recover.
The irony is sharp: the same wave of people moving to Southern Appalachia for its natural beauty — for exactly the kind of summer night magic that fireflies represent — is bringing the light pollution that threatens to erase it.
Canaries with Wings
Researchers are increasingly framing fireflies the way an earlier generation framed the health of trout streams: as an indicator species, a living report card on ecosystem condition.
A hollow with a thriving firefly population is telling you something. It's telling you the soil is intact, the moisture regime is functional, the leaf litter hasn't been compacted by foot traffic or stripped by invasive species, and the night sky above it is still dark enough to matter. Lose the fireflies and you haven't just lost a light show — you've lost a signal.
"When Photinus carolinus stops showing up," one park biologist explained, "I start asking what else is going wrong that we haven't noticed yet."
How to Help From Your Own Backyard
You don't have to be a scientist to be useful. Firefly Watch and the Xerces Society both offer free citizen science protocols that anyone can follow. Reducing or eliminating pesticide use — especially lawn insecticides that kill firefly larvae in the soil — is one of the highest-impact things landowners can do. Turning off outdoor lights during peak firefly season, typically late May through July across most of the Southern Appalachians, costs nothing.
And if you're lucky enough to have a wet meadow edge, a creek bottom, or a wooded hollow on your property, leaving it alone might be the most powerful conservation act available to you. Fireflies don't need much. They need darkness, moisture, and time.
Go out on a warm June night, find a spot away from the road noise and the porch lights, and sit still for twenty minutes. If the cold fire starts up around you, you'll understand immediately why these researchers spend their summers chasing it through the dark.
And you'll understand, just as quickly, what we stand to lose.
