Night Song Rising: The Whippoorwill Is Finding Its Voice Again in the Appalachian Dark
There's a particular kind of quiet that settles over a mountain hollow just after dusk — the kind where you hold your breath without meaning to. And if you've spent enough summers in the Southern Appalachians, you know exactly what sound used to fill that quiet. Three sharp syllables, over and over, insistent as a preacher who hasn't finished his point. Whip-poor-will. Whip-poor-will.
For a long stretch of years, that sound went mostly missing. The hollows stayed quiet in ways they weren't supposed to. Old-timers noticed. Birders noticed. Kids who grew up hearing their grandparents talk about the calling noticed its absence the way you notice a missing tooth with your tongue — constantly, involuntarily.
But something has been changing. Quietly, unevenly, and not without caveats — the whippoorwill may be finding its way back to some corners of these mountains.
What Went Wrong in the First Place
The Eastern Whip-poor-will (Antrostomus vociferus) isn't a bird most people ever actually see. It's a master of camouflage, spending its days pressed flat against leaf litter or bark, virtually invisible. What people know is the sound. And starting in the 1980s and accelerating through the 1990s and 2000s, that sound got harder to find.
Breeding Bird Survey data tracked steep declines across much of the species' eastern range — losses of 60 to 70 percent in some areas over roughly four decades. The reasons were layered and interconnected in the frustrating way ecological problems tend to be.
Habitat was part of it. Whippoorwills favor open or semi-open woodland edges — the kind of patchy, transitional forest that exists where old fields meet young trees, or where selective logging has opened up the canopy just enough to let in moonlight. As forest management changed and old agricultural land either developed or matured into closed-canopy forest, that sweet-spot habitat shrank.
But the bigger issue, the one that ornithologists keep circling back to, is insects. Whippoorwills are aerial insectivores — they eat on the wing, scooping up moths and beetles in the dark. And if you've paid any attention to the broader conversation about insect populations over the past decade, you already know where this is heading. Widespread insecticide use, light pollution disrupting moth behavior, habitat fragmentation — all of it hit the whippoorwill's food supply hard.
"You can have perfect habitat," says one wildlife biologist who has spent years studying night birds across the Blue Ridge, "but if there's nothing to eat, you're not going to hold birds. The insect piece is fundamental."
What People Are Hearing Now
Ask around in certain parts of western North Carolina, east Tennessee, and southwest Virginia, and you'll find something interesting: people who stopped expecting to hear whippoorwills are hearing them again.
Not everywhere. Not reliably. But enough that it registers.
Ruth Ann Blevins has lived her whole life on the same holler in Ashe County, North Carolina. She's in her late seventies and has the kind of memory for place that only comes from staying put. "We didn't hear them for years," she says, sitting on her porch in the blue hour before dark. "My husband used to say they'd gone for good. But last two summers, they've been back up on that ridge. I sat out here and cried the first night I heard it again. I'm not ashamed to say that."
Anecdote isn't data, as scientists are quick to point out. But the anecdotes are stacking up in ways that have researchers paying attention. Citizen science platforms like eBird have logged upticks in whippoorwill detections across select Appalachian counties, particularly in areas where certain land management practices have shifted.
The Forest Connection
One of the more compelling threads in the whippoorwill story involves timber management — specifically, the return of more active, disturbance-based forestry practices on some public and private lands.
For much of the latter 20th century, the dominant approach on many Appalachian forest tracts was essentially hands-off: let the trees grow, minimize cutting, protect canopy cover. That approach has real conservation value for certain species. But for whippoorwills and a suite of other shrubland and early-successional wildlife — golden-winged warblers, ruffed grouse, American woodcock — a closed, mature forest is actually poor habitat.
In recent years, some forest managers have returned to more aggressive thinning, controlled burns, and patch cuts that mimic the kind of natural disturbance the landscape used to experience more regularly. The results, in some places, have been striking.
"We've had whippoorwills calling on units we burned two and three years ago," says a forest wildlife manager working in the Pisgah National Forest area. "It's not a coincidence. They're responding to the structure."
The Nature Conservancy and several state wildlife agencies have been quietly expanding early-successional habitat programs across the region, partly with species like the whippoorwill in mind. It's slow, unglamorous conservation work — burning fields, cutting trees, managing for messiness — but the birds, apparently, appreciate it.
The Moth Problem Isn't Solved
Here's where the optimism needs some air let out of it: even where habitat is improving, the insect question remains unresolved. Studies on moth populations in the eastern U.S. continue to show declines in many areas, and without a reliable food base, any whippoorwill recovery is fragile at best.
Light pollution, in particular, is a growing concern that doesn't get enough attention in rural mountain communities. LED streetlights and security lights have spread even into fairly remote hollows over the past decade. Moths navigate by moonlight and are disrupted by artificial sources — which means that even in places where habitat looks right, the dinner table may be poorly stocked.
"We're seeing birds attempt to breed in areas where I'd expect them to succeed, and they're not producing young at the rates we'd hope," says one researcher who has been running breeding bird monitoring transects in the southern Blue Ridge for over fifteen years. "The habitat is there. Something else is limiting them."
Reducing outdoor lighting — or switching to warmer-spectrum bulbs less disruptive to insects — is something individual landowners can actually do. It's one of those rare conservation actions that costs almost nothing and might matter more than it seems.
Listening as an Act of Attention
There's something worth sitting with here beyond the population charts and the habitat assessments. The whippoorwill occupies a particular place in Appalachian cultural memory — it shows up in old songs, in folk sayings, in the kind of stories grandparents tell about what summer nights used to sound like. Its absence was felt as a loss not just by ecologists but by people who couldn't have told you the bird's Latin name.
That kind of cultural attentiveness — the neighbor who noticed the silence, the grandmother who cried when the calling came back — is itself a form of ecological monitoring. It's imprecise, sure. But it's distributed across thousands of porches and back fields in ways no survey grid can match.
If the whippoorwill is genuinely recovering in pockets of the Appalachians, it won't be because of any single intervention. It'll be because enough people — scientists, land managers, farmers who leave their field edges rough, homeowners who turn off a porch light — made small decisions that added up.
And maybe because enough people kept listening, even through the quiet years, refusing to accept the silence as permanent.
