Fitted by Hand, Held by Gravity: The Young Appalachians Reviving the Art of Dry-Stone Walls

There's a wall running along the back edge of Cora Hensley's property in Watauga County, North Carolina, that her great-great-grandmother helped build sometime around 1890. It's maybe three feet tall, slightly serpentine, built from whatever fieldstone the ground gave up when somebody turned it with a plow. It has outlasted four generations of the family, two floods, and a particularly nasty ice storm in 2009 that took out a section of the barn. The wall is still standing, still holding, still doing its quiet job of saying here — this is ours, this is the line.

Cora is twenty-six years old. Last spring, she spent three weekends rebuilding a collapsed section of that same wall, using nothing but her hands, a rubber mallet, and a method she learned from a YouTube channel run by a Welsh stonemason and a weekend workshop held at an old homestead in Ashe County. She had no formal training. What she had was patience, stubbornness, and the feeling that some things are worth doing the slow way.

"I kept thinking about who built the original," she says, sorting through a pile of sandstone slabs with the practiced eye of someone who's gotten good at reading rock. "Probably a woman, probably tired, probably doing it between everything else she had to do. And here I am, over a hundred years later, fitting the same stones back together. That felt like something."

What Makes a Dry-Stone Wall Different

Dry-stone construction — sometimes called dry stacking or dry-laid masonry — is exactly what it sounds like. No mortar. No concrete. No adhesive of any kind. Stones are selected, shaped if necessary, and fitted together so that the weight and geometry of each piece locks the others in place. A well-built dry-stone wall is held together entirely by gravity and the skill of whoever laid it.

The technique is ancient. You'll find dry-stone walls in Ireland, Scotland, the English countryside, across the Mediterranean, and throughout the highlands of East Africa. In Appalachia, the tradition arrived with Scots-Irish settlers in the 1700s and took root in the mountain landscape because the mountains had plenty of stone and the settlers had plenty of need. Walls marked boundaries, kept livestock in, terraced steep hillsides against erosion, and cleared fields of the rocks that would otherwise ruin a plow blade.

For most of the twentieth century, the craft declined. Concrete block was cheaper and faster. Bulldozers could do in an hour what a family spent a season accomplishing. The knowledge that had passed from hand to hand for generations started to thin out.

Now, something is shifting.

A Craft Finding Its Moment

Ask around at any homesteader gathering in western North Carolina or east Tennessee, and you'll start hearing the same thing: people want to learn to stack stone. Not as a novelty, not as a quirky hobby, but as a genuine skill with genuine value.

Marcus Tipton, who runs a small market farm outside of Marshall, North Carolina, built a retaining wall last year to shore up a terrace on his sloped property. He's thirty-one, grew up in Buncombe County, and had zero experience with masonry when he started. He took a two-day workshop offered through a local agricultural nonprofit, went home, and spent the better part of two months finishing a wall that now holds back roughly four tons of hillside.

"The thing nobody tells you," Marcus says, "is that it's basically a puzzle. You're looking at every rock and asking where it wants to go. Once you start thinking that way, you can't stop."

That puzzle-brain quality is part of the appeal for a generation that grew up digital and is increasingly hungry for tactile, physical work with visible results. But the interest isn't purely aesthetic. Dry-stone walls, when built correctly, are remarkably functional. They drain naturally, flex slightly with freeze-thaw cycles instead of cracking, and require no manufactured materials. For homesteaders trying to build sustainably and cheaply, that's a practical argument, not just a romantic one.

The Keepers of the Knowledge

Not everyone is learning from YouTube. In several Appalachian counties, older practitioners who never stopped building are suddenly finding themselves with students.

Delbert Proffitt, seventy-three, has been building and repairing dry-stone walls in Avery County, North Carolina, his entire adult life. He learned from his father, who learned from his. For decades, he worked mostly alone or with family, repairing old walls on neighboring farms for a modest fee. In the last four years, he's had more requests for informal apprenticeships than he knows what to do with.

"Young folks show up wanting to learn, and I teach 'em what I can," he says, not making a big deal of it. "Some of 'em pick it up fast. Some of 'em got a feel for it right away — you can tell. It's in how they handle the rock."

What Delbert teaches isn't just technique. It's judgment — knowing which stone will split cleanly and which will crumble, reading the drainage of a hillside, understanding why a wall built on a curve is actually stronger than one built perfectly straight. That kind of knowledge doesn't live in a manual. It lives in the hands.

Why It Matters Beyond the Wall

There's a cultural dimension here that goes deeper than craft revival. Dry-stone walls in Appalachia are a living record of land use, of family history, of where the fields ended and the forest began. Many of the old walls running through second-growth timber mark boundaries that predate the Civil War. They are, in a very literal sense, the handwriting of people who came before.

When a young builder repairs a section of a nineteenth-century wall rather than tearing it out and pouring concrete, they're making a statement about continuity. About the value of things that were made to last. About a relationship to land that isn't purely extractive.

Cora Hensley puts it plainly: "I'm not going to pretend I'm doing exactly what my ancestor did. I'm not. But I'm using the same material, the same basic idea, and I'm trying to understand what she understood about this particular piece of ground. That feels worth something to me."

The wall on her property runs along the tree line now, moss-covered on the north face, warm and dry on the south. Some of the stones are ones her great-great-grandmother touched. Some of them are ones Cora fitted last spring. You can't tell the difference, which is probably exactly the point.
